Movie Monday: The chamber garden of the Lower Belvedere with its special ambience is transformed into the most beautiful outdoor cinema in Vienna for the first time this year. This weeks event is “Caravaggio” (With Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, Tilda Swinton). Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (Nigel Terry), now one of the most admired Baroque painters, was regarded as an artistically blessed brute who, on the one hand, hustled with struggles and day-laborers on the other hand, painted cardinal saints on the other side. He was thrilled not least by his triple relationship with his model Ranuccio (Sean Bean) and the prostitute Lena (Tilda Swinton). Derek Jarman, in his atmospheric composing artist biography, gathers historical facts, vague conjectures, myths and pure fiction. And as Caravaggio himself sometimes painted biblical figures in seventeenth-century clothing, Jarman’s articles and spaces of the twentieth century always reappear. From the outset, this gives the liberating feeling that this is not a question of historical truth, but a true sense of the spirit of an epochal pioneer of baroque painting.
